Destruction of Sindh’s Agriculture

There are so many issues and factors that are responsible and affecting for the destruction of agriculture system of Sindh. Sindh’s agriculture is being destroyed due to acute shortage of water in river Indus, construction of dams and canals on river Indus have greatly influence the water of river Indus. Despite there is a shortage of water but still bulk amount of power is produced by hydroelectric power plants than coal fired thermal power plants. Our country had best irrigation system. But now that has been destroyed due to poor management. Heavy rain fall every year and flood of 2011 have destroyed major crops and losses of millions of rupees to the growers thus decreasing the overall national growth of Pakistan. After the flood of 2011 no area was left out which was unaffected by rain, 80% of the cotton, 80% of the tomatoes, onions other vegetables and fruits had been destroyed. In most of the districts many houses have been destroyed completely. Pets killed, in the agriculture areas this water not only destroyed current standing crop. But had affected the soil in a way that people would not be able sow any crop for coming season.

Since last year cotton production has been reduced to 45% than last couple of years, and other crops like sugar cane which was well known and popular crop of Sindh. But now this has been destroyed up to 75%. And we are importing sugar from other countries, other crops as potatoes, tomatoes, onions.. These crops also have been imported from India in large quantity. To some extent we are also importing the crop of wheat from Malaysia.

As we know Pakistan is an agricultural country. Farmers contribute greater part to the Pakistan economy near about 70%. But government is not taking any serious step in the favor of farmers. Growers could not get quality fertilizer for fields, prices of fertilizer is the big issue. Higher authority should take serious steps and organize the seminars for farmers for better output results.
